Have you wondered about what it means in Psalm 46:10 where it states to “be still” in the verse “Be still, and know that I am God”? I wonder about this scripture because I have had this verse shared with me, more than once, at times when I was facing challenging situations and I was not sure what to do. For a long time, I thought that if I am in a situation and I seeking God in prayer, my role is to do nothing – be still – and let God handle the situation/problem for me. Recently, I have been reflecting on this scripture, and I wondered if part of this scripture is about surrender, rather than being literally still (i.e., doing nothing).
I wonder if this part of the scripture is an invitation to surrender (i.e., to release) the expectations and the timing of how and when a situation/problem will be resolved and submit to God’s will and guidance. And maybe in doing so, it can help to alleviate or reduce stress and anxiety about a situation and when things will get better. So, I now wonder if being still is more about remaining consistent in prayer, patience, and discernment by the Holy Spirit for how best to use the season of waiting, which may involve doing something, rather than doing nothing.
