At first, one may not understand this analogy, that the “word of God is alive and active.
Sharper than any double-edged sword…” I was that person. Though I grew up in the
Christian faith, this scripture (amongst many others) did not have true meaning to me
until I started to build a relationship with God. It was only then I started to realize how
powerful the scriptures can be in speaking hope into a situation, encouragement into
depression, and healing to the broken. When I made the decision that I wanted to know
God beyond attending church, I spent time reading the Bible, memorizing scripture,
writing notes and trying to reflect on the Word throughout the day. Furthermore, I tried to
apply scriptures to my many situations for encouragement, and where there was an
opportunity, encouragement to others. I started to study the Word of God as if it was a
second language. I would meditate on it and try to recall it at various points in my day or
week to avoid trying to lose what I have studied.
For me, this scripture, punctuates the power found in the Word of God. Scriptures such
as those used in previous blogs can bring comfort, encouragement and guidance into
your situation. So much so, that it can be transformative – one of the scriptures that has
done this for me is Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one
can boast.” This scripture freed me from perfectionism and thinking that the more works
I do, I am in better standing with God – such a thought left no room for receiving the gift
of grace from God. It also led me to focus more on my faith in God, salvation, and His
power in all areas of my life.
What I am trying to convey here is the Word of God is powerful. It can soothe the hurts
of this life and give you hope. And when you work on building a relationship with God,
the scriptures take on a whole different meaning and application because you can
testify how a scripture and/or Biblical promise has been demonstrated in your life.
I hope that the scriptures used in these blogs are one way to show how the Word of
God is alive; encouraging; true; and can be active in your life when paired with a
relationship with God.
