“Don’t be afraid, David said to him [Mephibosheth], “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table”
2 Samuel 9:7
The story of David and Mephilbosheth warms my heart whenever I read it. I was reviewing 2 Samuel, chapter 9, and this is where you can find the story of David and Mephilbosheth. In this story, in summary, David asked if there was anyone to whom he can show kindness to for Jonathan (Saul’s son, and a close friend to David). In this conversation, it was revealed that Mephilbosheth, Jonathan’s son, is alive, however he was lame in both feet. So, David sent for him through a servant of Saul, called Ziba. When David met with Mephilbosheth, he stated that he will “surely show [him] kindness”. David restored until him the land that belonged to Saul and welcomed him to always eat at the Kings table. Now, Mephilbosheth had more than he did before he met with David, and presumably would not be in need for much more.
This story is an example of ultimate (some may even say radical) kindness and allegiance to friendship (with Jonathan). Through this kindness, Mephilbosheth received a blessing. This has me thinking about the importance of showing kindness, unwaveringly, because you never know when God will use your kindness to bless others, and receive a blessing yourself. If you are on the receiving end of kindness, consider to be receptive to the kindness that another may show you, because it might just be the blessing you’re looking for!
